The easiest way to get to the top of Google’s search results is pay.
For an advert, that is.
The other way to get there, or relatively near the top, is to blog. Even if you have a business.
A Longterm Strategy
I was doing some checking on a client account today and discovered that we’ve managed to get Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet’s website up to the fifth result in Google Sweden for “gymnasiet” (senior high school). After three wikipedia entries and Sweden’s largest portal for information about Sweden’s high schools comes Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet. In other words, IEGS, as its also known, is the first school website mentioned in Google for the Swedish equivalent to “high school”.
Obviously, I was pretty pleased to have helped IEGS achieve that result; nevertheless, I think the key takeaway here is that blogging is incredibly powerful. Regular blog posts peppered with the right keywords and a proactive link-building strategy do a lot to get you where you want to be in Google. And that means you’ll get found.
It’s taken a couple of years to get where Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet is today in Google and, I’ll be the first to admit, Jontus Media do not specialise in SEO. Sure, I can advise clients on the right kind of SEO approach but a lot of the information I’ve garned over the years is freely available on Google. That, and the experience I’ve gathered in this industry over the years, has helped me help IEGS climb up the search engine results pages.
The Future of Blogging
So although there’s a lot of discussion about the increasing significance of social media, let’s not forget the benefits of blogging. A site that’s regularly updated with a variety of content, primed for SEO with the right kind of keyword and link-building strategy, can go a long way to help you get where you want to be.
Even with words as common as “high school” – albeit in Swedish!
The tough thing, of course, is staying there near the top, especially because Google can change their rankings on a whim. Still, for the foreseeable future this kind of result illustrates the power of blogging.
