So you want to be on a podcast? Or you want to be a guest blogger? And you discover a show or blog that you want to be on and you decide to reach out to the host / blogger?
Hey! I would love to be on your show / guest blog. I am a massive fan of your show / blog. I particularly loved the episode / blog on “big fat topic”. I would love to share this, that or something else with your audience. (Serious voice!) They’ll really learn a lot. So how about it buddy ? When can we book a time to record=
I see variants of this two or three times a week. Sometimes more.
But do you know what ?
99.9% of the time I don’t even bother replying to these emails anymore.
Not even to the ones that try two or three times, progressively getting pushier and pushier. And some of them really do!
Sure, I used to reply but over the years, as my inbox has got noisier and noisier, I’ve given up.
Because these folks don’t give a damn about me. They don’t make me feel special. They don’t make me feel like I even know them or would want to know them.
Yes, the fact of the matter is that they are just trying to promote their latest book, gadget, widget, SEO, start up or whatever.
The Secret to Getting Invited onto a Podcast
If you want to get invited onto a podcast (or invited to guest post so you can get a link back to your blog), don’t ask to be on the show (or blog!) in the first place. At least, don’t just jump into someone’s inbox with your best snazzy pitch dressed up to the nines.
And most definitely don’t get your PA, VA or auntie Åsa to do your bidding for you. I personally have long ceased to be impressed by a hastily adapted pitch template. They are so easy to spot a mile off.
Yes, they always say how much they love my podcast, one episode in particular (without event demonstrating they’ve listened to it in the first place!). And they always go on to suggest what they could contribute to the show.
But do you know what ?
The best way to get invited onto the show is to take it slow.
Get to know me on Twitter, LinkedIn or Facebook. Comment on something I say. Reply to something I’ve posted.
If you genuinely engage with me, I’ll start to notice you. Even if we’re talking about basset hounds, French philosophers or photography, instead of marketing. And then when you start to talk about what you do, what you’re looking to promote, I’ll help promote you. You see I’m happy to do that for people that I care about. I do that naturally.
Any of the people I regularly connect with, I try and help them out as much as I can.
And if I feel that they might be an ideal guest on to the show, I’ll reach out to them.
Take it Easy
So to all of you trying to hit me up for an invite to come on The Moondog Marketing podcast (which has been downloaded over 400,000 times!), bugger off!
Or rather, let’s get to know each other first before you make your move. Go on. Make me feel like I actually know you.
